Local School Council

Local School Council News:

Dear Members of the Murray Language Academy Community,

On Tuesday, January 10th, as part of his farewell address, President Obama issued a call to service--an entreat--encouraging all of us to become more engaged in our communities. Whatever your politics, I think we can all agree that our schools need as much engagement, participation and support as we can muster.

To that end, I would like to announce that there are currently two vacancies on the Local School Council of Murray Language Academy including one (1) parent representative and one (1) community representative. These positions will be filled by a vote of the current membership of the Local School Council pursuant to CPS rule at the next LSC meeting on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 6:00 p.m.

If you would be interested in being considered for any of these appointments, I would encourage you to review the links and attached materials:

http://cps.edu/Pages/LSCEligibility.aspx

http://cps.edu/Pages/Localschoolcouncils.aspx

Once you've completed your review, please complete and return the completed documents to the Main Office (please disregard the due dates listed in these documents). All submissions must be received no later than Friday, January 20, 2017 at 3:45 p.m. The calendar of meetings is part of the PTO Facebook page as well as on the Murray school website. Please review these before applying and consider your ability to commit to participate in each meeting.

Candidates will be offered a brief opportunity to make a statement on their candidacy prior to the LSC members adjourning for a closed session to discuss the candidates. The LSC will return to open session in order to take final action.

Please share this information with others who might be interested. If you have questions about the process or the duties of these positions, please feel free to contact me at 312-218-7232 or by email at tbf1972@gmail.com

I know we're all pulled in lots of different directions and it's hard to commit to "one more thing". I would simply say that for myself and my colleagues on the LSC, there's more worth piling on for than our kids.

Please consider joining us.

Sincerely,

Tracey B. Fleming,
Chair, Murray Language Academy LSC

Getting to Know Your LSC

A Local School Council exists in every Chicago Public School. All elementary school LSC’s are made up of the school principal, six parents or guardians of students at the school, two teachers at the school, and two non-parent community residents. Parents and community members are elected. Teachers are appointed by the Board of Education, and the principal is automatically a member of the council.

The LSC is the policy making body for the school. The primary responsibilities of the LSC are:

1. Developing and Approving the School Improvement Plan for Advancing Academic Achievement (CIWP)

2. Developing and approving the school’s operating budget and authorizing major expenditures

3. Evaluating the principal annually, and hiring the principal.

The Murray LSC regular meeting and sub-committee meeting schedules are posted on the bulletin board in the front entry vestibule of the school. The agendas for the regular meetings which are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm is also posted on the board.

The LSC meetings are open to everyone. LSC’s are subject to the Open Meetings Act. This means the public has a right to know about LSC meetings and all votes are taken in public. There are times when a council member will motion for a closed session, for example in the event a personnel issue needs to be discussed. The council will then return and continue the regular meeting with comments or motions in public.

The Murray LSC also has several sub-committees to address special interests. The committees are open to everyone who wishes to participate. These committees are chaired by council members who may present motions at the regular meetings:

1. CIWP

2. PPLC

3. Budget and Finance

4. Staff Relations

5. Principal Evaluation

6. Community Relations

LSC elections are held every two years. In the event a parent or community council members resigns, the sitting council will vote on a candidate to replace the position vacated.
